Young Potters Daytime Workshop (6 Week course)

This fun, hands-on pottery course is designed for children aged 8+ to explore creativity, learn clay techniques, and experience the joy of making their own pottery. Each week combines playful projects with skill-building, decoration techniques, and plenty of imagination.

What children will learn:

  • Hand-building techniques: pinch pots, coils, slabs

  • Giving the wheel a whirl

  • Safe use of clay tools and studio practices

  • Slip decoration and underglaze painting

  • Creativity and self-expression

  • Time: 10:30am – 12:00pm

Weekly Programme

Week 1 (Oct 21): Introduction to Clay & Pinch Pot Animals
Studio welcome & safety. Explore clay, make pinch pot animals, decorate with slip.

Week 2 (Oct 28): Greek Coil Vases
Learn about ancient pottery, build a coil vase, add slip decoration.

Week 3 (Nov 4): Hand-Built Mug Workshop
Make and decorate a mug, practice attaching handles.

Week 4 (Nov 11): Slab-Built House Lantern
Create a house lantern with slab-building, decorate with slip patterns.

Week 5 (Nov 18): Give the Wheel a Whirl
Try a short, fun experience on the pottery wheel — throw a simple pot & decorate.

Week 6 (Nov 25): Paint a Bisque Mammoth
Paint a pre-fired bisque mammoth with underglazes, inspired by Aboriginal art.

What’s included:

  • All tools, clay, glazes, and firings

  • Aprons provided, though we suggest clothes that don’t mind a splash of clay

  • Step-by-step guidance tailored for children

  • Finished pottery to take home at the end
